"Zhamilya" is the story of a young woman's difficult love, who defies established traditions to meet her destiny. Love becomes her greatest challenge. All the characters are true people, deeply connected to the land and honoring the legacy of their ancestors. The play "Zhamilya," based on Chingiz Aitmatov's novella, won the 2019 Ticketon Award for Premiere of the Year, Kazakhstan's premier culture and entertainment award. "My father loved Almaty very much. So when I learned that "Zhamilya" would be staged here, I was thrilled." This is my father's early story, his most famous. When it was first published, the public reaction was extremely negative, and there was a great deal of criticism. They even wanted to ban "Jamila" altogether and persecute Aitmatov. A little later, "Jamila" was published in Moscow, and people saw it in a new light. A completely different attitude began," says the writer's son, Eldar Aitmatov.
