The action takes place in an alternate future, in the Republic of Gilead, where the military holds power. The country has a brutal culture and morals, and only officers and their wives enjoy social respect. In addition to the totalitarian social structure, the world faces a serious problem: infertility. Only one in a hundred women is capable of reproduction. To continue the officer line, families take in a servant - a surrogate mother from among ordinary women capable of bearing children. After fulfilling her duty, the servant must part with her child and serve under new masters.
