"The Maids" (French: *Les Bonnes*) is a play by the French playwright Jean Genet, written in 1947.
Claire and Solange, sisters who work as maids, decide to kill their "Madame." But why? She had been so kind to them - tending to them as if they were the most exquisite flowers!
How much cruelty can be bred by a poverty of the spirit and a background of servitude? Can two destitute sisters - who fall asleep in each other’s arms in an attic every night - truly comprehend virtue? And are they capable of love, when they spend their time savoring the details of their impending crime?
In this production of *The Maids*, tenderness bleeds into violence, beauty into ugliness, and farce into tragedy. In 2026, director Vasily Popov explores a fundamental question: can a person living in bondage ever truly love?
