The world surrounding the army barber Wojciech is presented in the play as not adapted for a natural, natural man. Both the Doctor, the Captain, and the rival Tambour Major are convinced of their superiority over the almost wordless soldier, who is ready to do anything to earn at least some money. In fact, it is Wojcicke, with his strange sensitivity, his pure love for Maria and his constant concern for their illegitimate child, who is the moral being in the play. And he is driven to frenzy, almost to madness, not by the betrayal of a woman, but by the whole way of life. Buchner's murder is the result of the disintegration of a personality constantly subjected to violence.
