Our past is gone. No one alive today has ever laid eyes on Australopithecus or Pithecanthropus; no one knows exactly when or by whom the very first fire was kindled; and no one ever witnessed the shamanic dances echoing beneath cave roofs during the Ice Age.

How, then, do we know any of this? Are the annals of history truly that incomplete? Or is it quite the opposite - has everything already been written down, leaving future generations with nothing to do but pore over dusty volumes, with no hope of discovering anything new? Have all the discoveries already been made?"
